XIRR is a historical or scenario-based return estimate, not a guarantee of future performance. Include the final portfolio value as a positive cash flow on its valuation date when estimating an ongoing investment’s return.

XIRR estimates the annualized return for irregular cash flows using their actual dates and a 365-day year. Enter investments as negative amounts and money received as positive amounts.

Smart Insights

Generated from the numbers you entered — no guesswork.

  • Cash flows are ordered by date; entries on the same date are combined for the return calculation.
  • The annualized rate discounts these dated cash flows to a net present value of approximately zero. It does not guarantee future returns.

What is the XIRR Calculator?

What the tool does, who it is for and what it cannot tell you.

XIRR is the extended internal rate of return. Unlike a simple percentage gain, it accounts for when each investment and receipt occurs, making it useful for irregular contributions, withdrawals and portfolio valuations.

XIRR Calculator formula

The exact maths behind every number on this page.

Σ [Cᵢ ÷ (1 + r)^((dᵢ − d₀) / 365)] = 0

Cᵢ
Signed cash flow: negative for payments, positive for receipts
dᵢ − d₀
Actual calendar days since the earliest cash-flow date
r
Annualized XIRR as a decimal, greater than −1

The rate is solved numerically and checked against the formula. A dash is shown instead of an unverified result.

XIRR Calculator calculation example

Hypothetical example: invest ₹10,000 on 1 January 2025 and receive ₹11,000 on 1 January 2026.

  1. 1Initial investment−₹10,000
  2. 2Receipt after 365 days₹11,000
  3. 3Solve for annualized return11,000 ÷ 10,000 − 1 = 10%

Estimated annualized XIRR is 10%; net cash flow is ₹1,000. This is a hypothetical return, not a promised outcome.

Important assumptions

What this calculation includes, and what it leaves out.

  • Every cash flow must have a valid date and finite, non-zero amount; 2–100 rows are supported.
  • Dates are compared at UTC midnight using actual elapsed days and a fixed 365-day year, including leap-year days.
  • Net cash flow may be zero: a valid zero return is supported.
  • After same-date amounts are combined, only one chronological sign change is supported. Multiple sign changes may yield multiple rates and are rejected rather than selecting a potentially misleading result.
  • The numerical solver can fail for extreme inputs or rates close to −100%; no unverified rate is displayed.
  • Taxes, fees and any remaining portfolio value are included only if you enter them as cash flows.

Financial tips

Practical guidance to act on your result.

  • Use the actual transaction dates, not assumed monthly intervals.
  • Include fees as negative cash flows if you want them reflected in the estimate.
