A date difference calculator counts the exact time between two dates: total elapsed days, complete weeks and remaining days, whole calendar months, and a years-months-days breakdown. It uses real calendar month lengths and leap years — never 30-day months. Pick a start and end date and the result updates instantly; if the end date is earlier, the dates are swapped automatically.

Smart Insights

Generated from the numbers you entered — no guesswork.

  • From 2026-01-01 to 2026-10-26 is 0 years, 9 months, 25 days on the calendar.
  • That is 298 elapsed days — 42 weeks, 4 days — or 299 days when both dates are counted.

What is the Date Difference Calculator?

What the tool does, who it is for and what it cannot tell you.

A date difference calculator tells you exactly how much time lies between two dates. Instead of counting days on a calendar by hand, it gives you the total elapsed days, complete weeks, whole months and a full years-months-days breakdown in one go.

It is useful for project timelines, notice periods, visa and travel planning, warranty and return windows, and any situation where you need an exact count of days between two dates.

How does the Date Difference Calculator work?

Each step the calculator runs, in plain language.

  1. 1

    Take the two dates

A start date and an end date — the end date defaults to today.

  2. 2

    Order them

If the end date is earlier than the start date, the two are swapped so the result is never negative or confusing.

  3. 3

    Count on the calendar

Whole years, then whole months, then days — using the real length of each month, including February 29 in leap years.

  4. 4

    Show every unit

Total elapsed days, an inclusive count, complete weeks with leftover days, and whole months.

What to enter in each field

The exact figure each input expects, so the result means what you think it means.

Start date
The first date of the period. It is excluded from the elapsed-day count.
End date
The last date of the period, included in the elapsed-day count. Defaults to today; an earlier date is swapped with the start date automatically.

Date Difference Calculator formula

The exact maths behind every number on this page.

Difference = End date − Start date, counted on the calendar

Elapsed days
End − Start in days; the start date is excluded and the end date is included
Inclusive days
Elapsed days + 1, counting both the start and end dates
Years, months, days
Whole calendar years, then whole months, then remaining days

The breakdown uses real calendar month lengths and leap years (February 29) — months are never approximated as 30 days and years never as 365 days.

Date Difference Calculator calculation example

Days between 15 January 2026 and 21 September 2026 (a hypothetical example).

  1. 1Start date15 Jan 2026
  2. 2End date21 Sep 2026
  3. 3Elapsed days249
  4. 4Calendar breakdown8 months, 6 days

The difference is 249 elapsed days — 8 months and 6 days, or 35 weeks and 4 days.

Important assumptions

What this calculation includes, and what it leaves out.

  • Elapsed days exclude the start date and include the end date; the inclusive count adds one day and is labelled separately.
  • Years, months and days are counted on the calendar with real month lengths and leap years — no 30-day-month approximation.
  • Dates are compared as calendar dates only, so time of day and time zones never cause off-by-one errors.
  • Supported dates range from 1 January 1900 to 31 December 2100.

Financial tips

Practical guidance to act on your result.

  • Use the inclusive day count when a rule says “including the start and end date”, and the elapsed count for durations like notice periods.
  • If you pick the dates in reverse order, the calculator swaps them and tells you — the numbers stay correct.
  • For legal or contractual deadlines, confirm which counting convention the document specifies before relying on either count.
  • Leap years are handled exactly, so a span crossing 29 February counts the extra day.
